Video Games And Responsibility - 872 Words
Video Games and Responsibility: In discussions of video games, one controversial issue has been whose responsibility it is to deal with the behavioral problems of children and teens who get influenced by the content in games. On one hand, the game industry argues that the responsibility should lie with whomever bought the game. On the other hand, others such as parents and Parental guidance agencies contend that their childrenââ¬â¢s bad behavior stems from games and that the video game industry should regulate the content to protect children from negative influences within the game. Others even maintain that video games promote violent crimes. My own view is that it depends on the person playing the game because certain people can be more influential than others, especially children. I also believe that it is the responsibility of the buyer to know the game that they or their children are playing and to take responsibility for the things that happens within their own household. I can agree that there are some games that are just horrifying, but I cannot agree that they alone are responsible for child misbehavior. Children have broad imaginations that are influenced by the world around them. Constantly learning what things are, what they do, and what they mean. For instance, a child is watching TV and happens to turn to a channel where he sees men boxing. Now, the child has never seen this before, his mind is incorporating. A Sunrise on the Veld by Doris Lessing Essay - 583 Words
An Early Morning on The Veld Sometimes I think that it takes a lot of writing by an author to give a vivid, clear picture of a characters personality. In Doris Lessings short story, A Sunrise on the Veld, she describes a boys intense feelings as he prepares for and goes out on an early morning hunt. To begin, her creative use of language recreates the feel of an early morning on the grasslands. Repetition is often frowned upon; however in this story, Lessing constructively uses repetition to emphasize the coolness of the morning air. It was cold, cold. Furthermore, Lessing uses figurative language in order for the text to appeal more to the readers senses. For example, the simile, springing out like a fish, remindsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Also, she exploits colorful, accurate adjectives and strong verbs to paint lively pictures of the setting. Numbed, chill earth, chilled dust, soles contracted, icy, steady shiver, cold muzzle, ache with cold, reluctance at the cold, etc. precisely illustrate the various reactions of the boy and his dogs to the chilly morning. Lastly, Lessing depicts the transition between the pitch blackness preceding sunrise and the blurred hues of sunrise. First, the author waits for the colorless greying of the edge of the stone. Next she spots a dim green color in the center of some leaf; this implies the beginning of sunrise. Next, Lessings story highlights the boys mental state and level of maturity. Obviously, the boy seems to be proud of his ability to control himself. At the outset of the play, he commands himself to rise at four thirty. Then he sleeps instantly and voluntarily. When he wakes up, he enjoys his triumph over the lure of sleep and the alarm clock. He also realizes that all his limbs are stretched, rested, and waiting to be given orders. Consequently, he recalls the time when he defied sleep for three days without even being exhausted. Next, the boy sneers with arrogance upon remembering his sleeping, resting parents. Moreover, Lessing communicates the degree of the boys physical sensation and alertness. At various stages in the plot, she illustrates the boys feel towards his surrounding. Wallstreet the Movie - 1026 Words
The movie Wall Street is a representation of poor morals and disappointing business ethics in the popular world of business. This movie shows the negative effects that bad business morals can have on society. The two main characters are Bud Fox played by Charlie Sheen and Gordon Gekko played by Michael Douglas. Bud Fox is a young stockbroker who comes from an honest working-class family but on the other hand, Gordon Gekko is a millionaire who Bud admires and wants to be associated with. Greed seems to be a huge theme of this movie. This movie portrays the unethical society we live in. It shows how money oriented society has become and that people will do almost anything to get ahead. Competitiveness has become such a widespread game allâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Then along with contacts obtained from Bud s years as a stockbroker the shares of Blue Star soar. When they reach a peak Bud has everyone sell including this investor and Gordon Gekko panics as he watches his shares of Bl ue Star drop like a rock. He sells quickly and takes a big loss. However this changes when Gekko decides to do a corporate raid on Fox s father s company. At this point Bud Fox must choose between the rich insider s lifestyle offered by working outside the law, or his father s more traditional blue collar values of fair play and hard work. He chooses to try and preserve the latter by utilizing what he has learned from Gekko. To achieve this Bud uses a business rival to break the deal, being indicted for insider trading in the process. He gets his last revenge by turning state s evidence against Gekko, going to jail himself in the process. It is in ones opinion that the movie Wall Street shows the very importantance of the value of information. If inside information is used to predict stock outcomes it becomes unfair and unjust to persons without the information. That s why it is illegal. You should not be able to manipulate the market with information that is not open to the public. International Management Case 1-2 Jollibee Food Corporation free essay sample
Jollibee was established by the Tan family in 1975, originally as a family-owned ice cream parlor in the Philippines, but quickly made the jump into the fast-food market due to the oil crisis of 1977 ââ¬â an environmental factor which would have caused the price of ice cream to double. The newly diversified company became an instant favorite, largely due to the home-style Philippine recipe of their hamburgers, and thus began to expand. One year later, with five stores in the metro area, the Tan family incorporated the company as Jollibee Foods Corporation. Question 1: How was Jollibee able to build its dominant position in fast food in the Philippines? What sources of competitive advantage was it able to develop against McDonalds in its home market? Jollibeeââ¬â¢s philosophy consisted of the ââ¬Å"Five Fââ¬â¢sâ⬠ââ¬â Friendliness, Flavorful food, Fun atmosphere, Flexibility in catering to customer needs, and Focus on families. Their main goal was to deliver quality products and ensure that their customers and staff were happy. We will write a custom essay sample on International Management Case 1-2 Jollibee Food Corporation or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page To do so, the Tan family held many of the key positions of operations and supplemented their expertise with professional managers. They understood the importance of having knowledgeable experts in the right places. The company was already doing business in the food industry, so the entry barrier was low for them to shift from ice cream to fast food. Being an early mover allowed Jollibee to select good locations and franchisees. Their decision to finance growth internally for the first 16 years was also a key factor to their quick expansion. When McDonaldââ¬â¢s entered the Philippine market in 1981, this became the first serious competitive challenge that Jollibee faced. Thanks to Jollibeeââ¬â¢s menu of culturally desirable food which was highly preferred by Philippine customers over McDonaldââ¬â¢s, they felt they had a chance to compete with the big-name brand. Utilizing one of the ââ¬Å"Five Fââ¬â¢sâ⬠ââ¬â Flexibility ââ¬â Jollibee introduced the ââ¬Å"Champâ⬠burger which was intended to compete with the Big Mac. In advertising this new product, Jollibee focused not only on the large size of the burger, but also on its local, cultural taste. This initiative, along with the companyââ¬â¢s tight control over operations which kept costs low, were surely key success factors in winning brand appeal over McDonaldââ¬â¢s in the Philippines and ultimately allowing them to attain competitive advantage in its home market. Question 2: How would you evaluate Tony Kitchners effectiveness as the first head of Jollibees international division? Does his broad strategic thrust make sense? How effectively did he develop the organization to implement his priorities? As head of Jollibeeââ¬â¢s international division, Tony Kitchner felt that his new division should have a different identity and capabilities from its domestic side in the Philippines. He felt that Jollibeeââ¬â¢s existing image and management approach would not help his strategies of projecting a world-class company. Very quickly, Kitchner formulated expansion initiatives called ââ¬Å"targeting expatsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"planting the flag. â⬠To ââ¬Å"plant the flagâ⬠, Kitchner built stores in countries that had little or no fast-food presence based on his idea of setting the pace and standards in new markets. He felt that as an early mover, Jollibee could create brand recognition, customer loyalty and high sales before competitors could enter the market, giving them an advantage to remain on top. Kitchnerââ¬â¢s idea of ââ¬Å"targeting expatsâ⬠was aimed at allowing the company to ease its transition into an unfamiliar market. Although there was the risk of targeting too narrow of a segment, Jollibeeââ¬â¢s success in the niche market would allow it to later appeal to a broader audience. In my opinion, Kitchnerââ¬â¢s strategy makes sense as a conceptââ¬â unfortunately Iââ¬â¢m not convinced that his broad strategic thrust was executed well. During Kitchnerââ¬â¢s time at Jollibee, there was great expansion and increased sales ââ¬â but this may not be indicative of Kitchnerââ¬â¢s strategy. In many cases, stores were forced to shut down due to losses. This is a sign of Kitchnerââ¬â¢s unplanned strategy that was unsupported by proper analysis and research. In order for Kitchnerââ¬â¢s strategy to work, there needed to be a deeper understanding of customer preference in the new markets and expats. The company also needed to appeal to a broader audience. Kitchner also failed to push forward the international divisionââ¬â¢s initiatives due to internal company conflicts. To create his ââ¬Å"world-classâ⬠company, Kitchner stole employees from domestic operations causing a poor first impression that lasted the duration of his careers at Jollibee. Pulling away from the domestic side to create a separate and independent international division also caused failure of RD and other financial activities which were controlled by the domestic division. Kitchnerââ¬â¢s continued tension within the organization caused the international division to fail in making potentially beneficial changes such as improved store layout, redesigned logo and menu modifications. If Kitchner had formed an alliance with the domestic division, he could have had their support in his endeavors and effectively executed his expansion strategies.
