A Sunrise on the Veld by Doris Lessing Essay - 583 Words

An Early Morning on The Veld Sometimes I think that it takes a lot of writing by an author to give a vivid, clear picture of a characters personality. In Doris Lessings short story, A Sunrise on the Veld, she describes a boys intense feelings as he prepares for and goes out on an early morning hunt. To begin, her creative use of language recreates the feel of an early morning on the grasslands. Repetition is often frowned upon; however in this story, Lessing constructively uses repetition to emphasize the coolness of the morning air. It was cold, cold. Furthermore, Lessing uses figurative language in order for the text to appeal more to the readers senses. For example, the simile, springing out like a fish, reminds†¦show more content†¦Also, she exploits colorful, accurate adjectives and strong verbs to paint lively pictures of the setting. Numbed, chill earth, chilled dust, soles contracted, icy, steady shiver, cold muzzle, ache with cold, reluctance at the cold, etc. precisely illustrate the various reactions of the boy and his dogs to the chilly morning. Lastly, Lessing depicts the transition between the pitch blackness preceding sunrise and the blurred hues of sunrise. First, the author waits for the colorless greying of the edge of the stone. Next she spots a dim green color in the center of some leaf; this implies the beginning of sunrise. Next, Lessings story highlights the boys mental state and level of maturity. Obviously, the boy seems to be proud of his ability to control himself. At the outset of the play, he commands himself to rise at four thirty. Then he sleeps instantly and voluntarily. When he wakes up, he enjoys his triumph over the lure of sleep and the alarm clock. He also realizes that all his limbs are stretched, rested, and waiting to be given orders. Consequently, he recalls the time when he defied sleep for three days without even being exhausted. Next, the boy sneers with arrogance upon remembering his sleeping, resting parents. Moreover, Lessing communicates the degree of the boys physical sensation and alertness. At various stages in the plot, she illustrates the boys feel towards his surrounding.
